Painting while people watch is scary if you're not used to it.  I did this last Sunday as a demonstration during Artist Alley on Main St. Markham.  I'll have more about that later.    I was trying to be very loose and free like Charles Reid but I was too nervous to acheive that kind of look.   After a little while, I got used to it and people were very kind.
Then a woman and her aged father came along.  They watched for awhile and then she told me that he had been a watercolor master in China.  I just about dropped my brush.  I assumed he must think I was dreadfull.  I mumbled something about just messing around with paint...hehe.   She frowned and then I noticed he was smiling away at my picture.  Not speaking any english, he had no idea what I was saying.  He was just enjoying watching me paint with no harsh judgement.  He nodded at me and I suddenly realized I was the harsh critic and my own worst enemy.  One of these days I'll learn to get rid of that nasty critic!

Its a lovely painting. I really like the little dog you've made him 'come alive' perfectly. Its awesome of you to paint in public, I'm not sure if I have the nerve to try something like that yet. I'm bad enough at getting the words 'I am an artist' out of my mouth!!!
This painting is lovely and your work is very good. Hit that inner critic with a big stick!!! :-)

I love the story behind this wonderful painting. I'd probably react the same way as you did had I heard I was being watched by a master!! Sheesh! Talk about pressure. Nonetheless the finish came out nothing short of fantastic.

I hope us saying your painting is beautiful will shut up the critic for a while! (I say "for a while" only because I know just how friking stubborn our inner critics can be!!

What wonderful validation of your work! I can certainly see what he was smiling about. No WAY would I be able to create with people looking over my shoulder!

Very brave of you. It's a gorgeous painting, of a difficult subject matter (multiple portraits), captured beautifully, but doing all this with people looking over your shoulder, well that takes on heroic proportions...

This is a very nice painting, Laurel (great dog!)... especially considering it was done out in public. Yikes! I love the story you told about that day at the show... as a veteran of a few shows, I know that they are not for the faint of heart, but surprising and wonderful moments can and do happen. Your book project is very exciting too!
And thank you so much for your comments and compliments on my own blog/art/words for Illustration Friday!
